"Take It for Granite"
An innovative new technique from Old Dad!
You will need
- stain for base coat
- 1 or more additional colors to dab on for effect
- and clearthane
- tac rag
- 120 paper/600 gr paper
- foam brush
- small pieces of natural sponge
This is one of the most interesting finishes and surprisingly easy, once you have decided on your color scheme (ex: for a blue-green marble effect-you need blue-white haze & forest green)
* * * * * Here is how you do it * * * * *
Wipe on your base coat (blue) and let dry. Use a foam brush and paint or wipe on an additional coat of blue (no sanding in between) Let it dry thoroughly - overnight is good.
Take a small piece of natural sponge - dip it in the white haze and dab
it on the blue base coat (you can twist or drag it a bit for artistic effect)
if you feel you have too much white in an area you can roll a dry portion
of the sponge over it to remove any excess stain. Let this dry AND take another
bit of sponge - dab the "forest green" over or around the white
and the blue for the desired effect (Your base coat will be almost hidden
by added colors) LET DRY OVERNIGHT. SAND lightly with 600 grit sandpaper if
it feels rough. Wipe with a tac rag and brush on a coat of semi-gloss clearthane.
Note: if you use semi-gloss you'll have a cool slick surface
that feels like the real thing. Also several coats of clearthane will give
it "depth"- just be sure to let each coat dry completely before
applying the next.
! ! ! NEWS FLASH ! ! !
You
can mix whatever colors fit your decor and so give your granite or marble
exactly the look you want to accent your surroundings. . . .AND although unfinished
furniture is the easiest to do you can also take a well used older piece of
furniture and really dress it up by giving it a new "marble" top.
Just sand down the top, apply a base coat and proceed as above.
