How To.....

Until our Wipe On Poly Stains and Top Coatings were formulated, finishing unfinished furniture or antiques was an intimidating process. You could count on expensive brushes, hazardous oily rags and a big mess. Not only that - the end result generally was amateurish.

Here's how to transform "ready to finish" into beautiful furniture you'll be proud to have in your home. Not only is it easy to do in the first place...it is equally easy to maintain. No oils and waxes needed.....the surface actually repels dust and stands up to the hazards of everyday use.

What you need:

~a well ventilated place to work
~100 or 120 grit sandpaper
~600 grit wet 'n dry sandpaper
~Tack cloth
~Lint free rag (or old t-shirt)
~a foam brush (optional) . . and...
OLD DAD'S STAIN & TOP COATING - OF COURSE

Take apart anything that comes apart easily

Sand the surfaces to be stained with your 100/120 grit sandpaper.

Be sure to sand with the grain.

Wipe off all the sanding dust with your tack cloth.

Staining

Shake or stir the stain thoroughly before you start, and test it on a hidden area to be sure this is the color you want.

Do one area at a time. Use your lint free rag to apply a generous coat of stain. Wipe it on in the direction of the grain then wipe it in using a circular motion.

Use a clean rag and wipe it off!
Wipe in the direction of the grain and remove all the excess stain.

Pull knobs can be dipped directly into the can and then dried overnight.

Continue the staining process--one area at a time--until you have the whole piece stained. Let it dry overnight.

Tip: if you want a deeper, darker color - apply a second coat as follows: Wipe on a generous coat with the cloth pad, then take a quarter sheet of wet 'n dry  sandpaper (for ease fold the sandpaper in thirds) and wet sand the surface very lightly (on turned surfaces such as legs and spindles using a white nylon 3M pad will make the job easier). Finish by wiping down all the surfaces with the same cloth pad and LET IT DRY OVERNIGHT.
