Some of you run your businesses to support your families, your golfing habit
or to have an excuse to play with your computer. Old Dad's motivation
is to support his boating habit. Doing the every 4 to 6 months routine, quaintly
referred to by the boating crowd as "brite work", may well
be the real reason he got into the finishing business. After all we've only
been in this business since '77 and he has been in boating all his life.
So
in between making the best interior stains and top coatings in the business
he and Carl (our chemist) have tried literally everything the resin companies
have to offer. An exterior finish is a bit of a problem- it has to allow for
expansion and contraction of the wood on a daily basis, it has to look sharp,
if the job is going to last even six months it needs a good UVG, - AND it
has to be fast and easy for the boater to apply.
The hard truth is that any day that is good enough to apply varnish and have it dry is a day better spent sailing or fishing. After all these years, uncountable hours, and product tests, they found the right formula for teak (Marine Gold) and mahogany (Classic Red). We tested it on Old Dad's, a 37' "rough water" trawler, for over a year before we ever packaged it.
It was also tested by many grateful sailors at the Oceanside Yacht Club
before we marketed it at all. (Of course, it may be coincidence that OLD DAD's
has received yacht club's plaque for the "best maintained boat"
for the past several years...but we think it's due to OLD DAD's Exterior
Marine Gold).
It
stands to reason that any finish that survives on the ocean has got to be
good on just about any exterior surface so it has become a favorite for exterior
doors and wood work. It is also the odds on choice if -for instance- you have
redwood paneling around the top of a shower in your bathroom.
You will note that these are all places that need a tough and "flexible" finish - soft enough to allow for the movement of the wood WITHOUT FAILING AS A TOP COAT.
Interior finishes for furniture and cabinetry are also tough but they need to be hard (not flexible) in order to stand up to the hazards of everyday use.
OLD DAD'S EXTERIOR IS AVAILABLE AS "MARINE GOLD" OR (shades of the old ChrisCraft) "CLASSIC RED".
