Using Our "Finishing the Easy Way" Stains and Top Coatings
Black Forest Oak as Ebony Lacquer
Follow our regular staining procedure for the first coat. (If you want the grain to really show with oak or ash, you can use 000ssteel wool to emphasize the grain - otherwise just sand with 100 grit first.) Apply the Black Forest Oak liberally with a lint free cloth. Wipe with the grain and then across it to be sure it is completely covered. Then take a clean cloth and wipe off all the excess. let this first coat dry completely! This is especially important with oak and ash.
When you are sure it is completely dry you can use a rag or a foam brush and "lay on" your second coat. Just be sure to get a light even coating. Do not wipe this off. Just let it get totally dry before you do anything else. When it is thoroughly dry you again "lay on" a coat of stain - another light even coating which you do not wipe off. This too must be allowed to dry completely.
Alternate look... If the furniture you are working on is oak or ash you can enhance the grain for a "limed" effect. For this jazzy special you will need a can of "White Haze". After your 3 coats of Black Forest Oak have dried thoroughly - but before you apply Clearthane - wipe on a coat of White Haze (Wipe across the grain) an area at a time and immediately wipe it back off so that that only white that is left is in the grain. This coat must also be allowed to dry completely - a minimum of 24 hours - before you proceed with the Clearthane.
The Finishing Touch: Three coats of stain and sealer applied in this way has quite a bit of gloss, but to finish the project you will want to buff each surface lightly using 600 grit polishing paper - remove any residue with our lint free tac and apply a coat of our Wipe On Semigloss Clearthane. (If you want a satin finish use the Satin Clearthane and for the flat look you can use the Matte.) Let the clear coat dry completely then wipe on a second coat. Two coats will give your furniture a nicely finished appearance. Let it dry for 24 hours and you have a finish that is not only beautiful but it will stand up to the hazards of everyday use.
